Are You Interviewing Somewhere Else?

Job Seekers,

I know you're interviewing with other companies. You know I know. I know you know I know. So don't keep it a secret!

Good recruiters won't get upset, irritated, annoyed, etc., if you tell them that you have other interviews and other positions you are considering. In fact, it's in your best interest to let us know you have other positions and what it is about these positions that intrigues you. Why should you tell us? Well, if we can give this information to our client company, it may force them to move a little faster in the interview process if they feel you are a good candidate. Alternatively, if we truly know the things that are of interest to you in your next job, we can find out if our job has any or those characteristics and relay that information to you.

Now, I know there is an ulterior motive here. Yes, it makes recruiters look bad when job seekers pull out of the process and take another position. Even worse is when job seekers cancel a final interview on the same day it is due to take place! So yes, I'd like to prevent that from happening. But I truly believe if job seekers share this information, it can only benefit them.

Personally, I don't see the sense in canceling a final interview. Why not go through with the interview? What if you learn some new information on the final interview that makes this job more exciting? It can only benefit you, the job seeker, to gather as much information as possible before making that final decision.

So next time you are working with a recruiter, let them know about the other positions you have in the works. You don't have to share client details (I'm not trying to simply drum up more business). But let us know if you're about to get an offer (perhaps we can move our client along and get you an even better offer), and let us know what's cool about this other job (maybe our job has cooler perks and we either didn't know those specifics or forgot to share them). It's only going to benefit you in the long run!!
